How Proper Lubrication Extends the Life of Your Garage Door

Lubrication is the cheapest maintenance there is, and the easiest to get wrong.
Use the right product
White lithium grease or a garage-door silicone spray. WD-40 is a solvent and degreaser — it strips protection and attracts grit.
Lubricate these parts
Hinges, roller stems and bearings, the torsion spring coil, end bearing plates, and the opener rail or screw drive.
Never lubricate the tracks
Tracks guide rollers; they aren't a bearing surface. Oil there collects dirt and causes the rollers to slip and bind.
Twice a year is enough
Spring and fall, wiped clean first. Over-application is nearly as bad as none at all.
