Springs carry the entire weight of your door. They fail eventually — but they almost always warn you first.
Visible gaps or rust in the coil
A two-inch separation in the torsion coil means the spring has already snapped. Heavy rust and flaking on the coil means it's close.
The door feels heavy or won't stay put
Pull the manual release and lift the door halfway. A balanced door stays where you leave it. If it slams down or shoots up, the spring tension is wrong.
Jerky movement and loud bangs
A sharp bang from the garage — often mistaken for a gunshot — is a classic broken torsion spring. Stop using the opener immediately.
Crooked or slow opening
If one side lifts before the other, or the opener strains and stops, get it inspected before the cables come off the drums.
