What to Do When Your Garage Door Gets Stuck Halfway

A door frozen halfway is both a security risk and a safety hazard. Work through this checklist before forcing anything.
Stop and clear the area
Keep people and vehicles out from under the door. Stop pressing the wall button — repeated attempts can bend tracks or strip the opener gear.
Check the obvious
Look for an object in the track, ice at the threshold, a blocked or misaligned photo eye, and a tripped breaker or unplugged opener.
Look for a broken spring or cable
A snapped cable hanging loose or a gapped spring coil explains most mid-travel stops. Do not use the manual release with a broken spring — the door can drop.
Call for same-day help
We carry springs, cables, rollers, and opener parts on the truck, so most stuck doors are resolved in a single visit.
