How to Troubleshoot Misaligned Garage Door Safety Sensors

Repair

Photo-eye sensors are the most common reason a door refuses to close. Most cases are simple; a few are not.

Read the lights

One sensor shows a steady sending light, the other a steady receiving light. A blinking or dark light means the beam is broken or the pair is out of alignment.

Clean and realign

Wipe both lenses with a soft dry cloth, then loosen the wing nut and tilt each bracket until both lights are steady. Retighten carefully.

Check sun, wiring, and mounting

Direct low sunlight can blind a receiver. Staples pinching the wire, corroded splices, and loose brackets all cause intermittent faults.

When it isn't the sensors

If the lights are perfect and the door still reverses, the opener's close-force or travel limit is set wrong. That adjustment should be done by a technician.
