Why Is My Garage Door Making Loud Noises? Common Causes & Fixes

Doors talk. Learning what each noise means saves you an emergency call later.
Squealing and screeching
Usually dry rollers, hinges, or bearings. A proper lithium or silicone lubricant service fixes it — never use WD-40 as a lubricant on a door.
Grinding
Often worn nylon rollers or a failing opener gear. Grinding from the opener head typically means a stripped drive gear.
Rattling and vibration
Loose hinges, brackets, and track bolts. Vibration slowly backs fasteners out; a tune-up tightens the whole system.
Popping or banging
Panels binding in the tracks, or a spring under uneven tension. This one is not a DIY fix — call before it becomes a break.
